Rohit and Kohli Bounce Back in Style

Only weeks ago, questions were raised about whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could continue delivering at the highest level after a shaky start to the ODI series in Australia. Today, that debate feels outdated. Both stalwarts have stormed back with performances reminiscent of their peak years, proving once again why they remain the pillars of India’s ODI batting lineup.

Rohit’s last five ODI scores—75, 14, 57, 121* and 73—show a remarkable resurgence, culminating in him being named Player of the Series against Australia. Kohli, too, has been in sensational touch, with scores of 65*, 102, 135 and 74*, earning him the Player of the Series award in the recently concluded South Africa series.

Their consistency has reaffirmed that despite being on the wrong side of 30, the duo remain India’s most dependable ODI performers. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir says it’s too early to predict their roles in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Gambhir emphasized the importance of staying focused on the present, adding that the World Cup is still two years away. He highlighted the need for younger players to seize opportunities as they arise, especially in a format that demands long-term planning.

Young Guns Shine: Gaikwad and Jaiswal Grab Their Chance

Injuries to Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer opened the door for Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the youngsters responded spectacularly, each scoring their maiden ODI centuries against South Africa. Gambhir praised both for their temperament and adaptability under pressure.

He noted that Gaikwad, who batted out of his regular position, displayed exceptional composure and justified the team management’s faith shown in him through India A performances. Jaiswal, already known for his flair in Test cricket, showed early signs of becoming a formidable force in white-ball formats as well.

Gambhir stated that building a strong young core will be a major focus in the months leading up to the 2027 World Cup. The plan is to groom a pool of 20–25 players, giving emerging talents regular opportunities without compromising the roles of established leaders like Rohit and Kohli.

As Gambhir reiterated, once the captain and vice-captain return, they will remain first-choice starters. But promising players like Gaikwad and Jaiswal must stay ready to make the most of every chance that comes their way.
