Sai Sudharsan’s Struggles in Test Cricket

Since making his Test debut against England, young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan has struggled to find consistency at the highest level. In five Tests so far, the Tamil Nadu southpaw has managed only 273 runs, with just two half-centuries to his name. His recent outings in the two unofficial Tests against South Africa also didn’t go as planned, with modest scores of 32, 12, 17, and 23.

The lack of big scores has raised questions about Sudharsan’s place in the Indian Test setup, especially with Dhruv Jurel pushing hard for a higher batting position. However, former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara believes Sudharsan is only “one big hundred away” from rediscovering his rhythm and confidence.

Speaking on JioHotstar, as quoted by Hindustan Times, Pujara said,

“It will be an important series for Sai. He is a young player who is maturing rapidly. He scored some runs in England and also got a few against the West Indies. He has shown potential—it’s just about converting those starts. There were a few soft dismissals in England. Once he gets that first Test hundred, he’ll be far more confident.”

Pujara further emphasized that Sudharsan’s focus should be on converting starts and proving his value to the team, regardless of his batting position.

“It’s not just about the No. 3 spot; it’s about proving he belongs in this playing XI. As of now, yes, he will continue at No. 3, but Dhruv Jurel has also shown great potential. If he continues to score runs, the team might consider reshuffling the order. Still, being a left-hander, it’s important for Sai to maintain that No. 3 position. I’m hopeful he gets his maiden Test hundred soon,” Pujara added.

Dhruv Jurel Pushing for Higher Batting Role

On the other hand, Dhruv Jurel has been in impressive form. The young wicketkeeper-batter scored his maiden Test hundred in the previous series against the West Indies and carried that momentum into the unofficial Tests against South Africa, where he notched up twin centuries.

Jurel is expected to retain his place in the playing XI for the upcoming first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, starting November 14 (Friday). Depending on team combinations—whether India opts for an extra batter, bowler, or an all-rounder—Jurel could even move up to the crucial No. 3 position in the future.

With competition heating up within the squad, all eyes will be on Sai Sudharsan to convert his promise into performance. As Pujara said, a single big innings could well be the turning point in the young left-hander’s Test career.
