Shaheen Shah Afridi has clarified the circumstances surrounding his recent appointment as Pakistan’s ODI captain, confirming that the leadership change was made with full mutual understanding. The 24-year-old left-arm pacer recently replaced Mohammad Rizwan, who stepped down willingly after a successful tenure behind the stumps. Afridi emphasized that the transition was smooth and respectful, reflecting the unity within the Pakistan squad.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had announced Afridi as the new ODI captain following Rizwan’s tenure. Afridi made a winning start to his captaincy, leading Pakistan to a 2–1 series victory over South Africa in his first series in charge.
Afridi Discussed Leadership Change with Rizwan Before Taking Over
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Afridi revealed that he personally approached Rizwan before accepting the captaincy. “I wanted to ensure complete clarity between us,” he said. Afridi asked Rizwan if he was comfortable with him taking over the role, to which Rizwan responded positively.
“He said he was happy to step aside and that I should take on the responsibility. It was his own decision. There was no issue between us,” Afridi explained. He further stressed that there was no misunderstanding or internal conflict, saying he only agreed to become captain after Rizwan’s consent.
“I didn’t want anyone to think I had gone behind someone’s back,” Afridi said. “Everything happened with mutual respect.”
Focus on Team Unity and Positive Cricket
Afridi highlighted that his conversation with Rizwan reflects the strong camaraderie within the Pakistan team. “We are all part of one family. Whoever leads, the rest support him fully. That’s how a team should function,” he said.
The young pacer also shared his vision for Pakistan’s cricket under his leadership. “I’ll try to give my best and lead from the front. Our goal is to win matches and keep improving as a team,” Afridi added. His focus remains on building consistency and ensuring Pakistan plays positive, competitive cricket.
