Madhya Pradesh skipper Rajat Patidar continues to make headlines in domestic cricket, scoring a sublime unbeaten century on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy clash against Punjab in Indore. The 31-year-old right-hander remained not out on 107, helping his team secure a 73-run first-innings lead after bowling Punjab out for 232.
This latest knock adds to Patidar’s growing stature in India’s domestic circuit, as he now boasts over 5,000 first-class runs, and this innings marked his 16th century in the format.
Consistent Domestic Form Strengthens Patidar’s Comeback Bid
Patidar’s form has been nothing short of spectacular in recent months. Since August, his last eight first-class innings read: 66, 10, 101, 13, 77, 125, 66, and now an unbeaten 107. That’s three centuries and three fifties in just eight innings—an incredible run that puts him firmly in the spotlight.
On Thursday, October 16, Patidar stitched a crucial 147-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Venkatesh Iyer, who scored a fluent 73 off 114 balls. The duo stabilized the innings after a minor wobble and put Madhya Pradesh in control heading into Day 3.
Test Comeback on the Horizon?
Despite his domestic dominance, Patidar has had limited opportunities at the international level. He featured in just three Tests for India last year, scoring only 62 runs in six innings, leading to his omission from the squad.
However, his recent form could prompt selectors to reconsider, especially with India set to tour South Africa next month for a crucial Test series. At 31, Patidar brings experience, consistency, and leadership—qualities that could bolster India’s middle order overseas.
Notably, Patidar also led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to their maiden IPL title earlier this year, proving his ability to perform under pressure across formats.
As the Ranji season progresses, all eyes will be on whether the selectors reward Patidar’s red-hot form with a deserved Test recall.
