Australia have announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against India, starting October 19, 2025. The three-match ODI series will be followed by five T20Is across various cities. One of the most notable decisions is the omission of Marnus Labuschagne from the ODI squad, while in-form batter Matt Renshaw has earned a well-deserved call-up.
Labuschagne Dropped from ODI Squad, Renshaw Rewarded for Domestic Form
Marnus Labuschagne’s exclusion from the ODI squad isn’t a major surprise. The right-hander has struggled in recent outings, failing to score a single 50+ score in his last 13 ODIs. According to team sources, he may have missed the South Africa tour earlier in the year as well if not for an injury to Matthew Short at the time.
In contrast, Matt Renshaw has been in red-hot form in domestic one-day cricket. Known primarily for his red-ball exploits as an opener, Renshaw is likely to slot into the middle order in the 50-over format. His List A record is impressive—2756 runs from 74 innings at an average of 41.13 and a strike rate of 95.03. He also enjoyed a strong 2024-25 season for Queensland, scoring 305 runs at an average of 50, including scores of 80, 106, and 62 against Sri Lanka A.
Joining him in the ODI squad is fast-bowler Mitchell Starc, who returns after resting during the South Africa series. Starc, who recently retired from T20Is, brings vast experience to the squad. All-rounder Mitchell Owen and Matthew Short also return after recovering from injuries. However, Aaron Hardie, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Labuschagne have been left out.
With Pat Cummins still recovering from a lumbar bone stress injury, Mitchell Marsh continues as ODI captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey will miss the first ODI in Perth as he features in the Sheffield Shield for South Australia. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis is expected to keep wickets in Carey’s absence.
Australia Also Reveal T20I Squad for First Two Matches
Australia have also named a T20I squad for the first two games of the five-match series against India. The focus remains on balancing workloads ahead of a busy home summer and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Glenn Maxwell remains unavailable due to a wrist fracture sustained before the New Zealand series.
Cameron Green is part of the ODI setup but will skip the T20I series to focus on Test preparations for the Ashes. Wicketkeeper Josh Philippe and Alex Carey have both been left out of the T20I squad that recently defeated New Zealand 2-0. Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis return to strengthen the lineup.
Chair of selectors George Bailey emphasized the dual goals of preparing for the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. “We’re trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare individuals for the Test series while maintaining continuity in the T20 squad,” Bailey said.
