In a major leadership shake-up, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain of India’s ODI team, replacing veteran Rohit Sharma. The decision, made official on Saturday, October 4, also marks a significant transition in Indian cricket as Gill now leads the national side in both Test and One Day Internationals.
Gill has already impressed in his short stint as Test captain, securing back-to-back wins in England and registering a dominant innings victory over the West Indies at home. His promotion to ODI captain reflects the selectors’ long-term vision and confidence in the 26-year-old’s leadership skills.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI Captaincy Record Ends on a High
Rohit Sharma steps down with an impressive record as India’s ODI skipper. In his 56 matches at the helm, India secured 42 wins, including an unbeaten run in the 2025 Champions Trophy and a memorable 10-match winning streak in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Though Rohit has retired from T20Is and Tests, he remains a vital part of the ODI squad and is set to return for the upcoming series in Australia.
Joining Rohit in his return is Virat Kohli, who has also called time on the shorter and longer formats. The two legends were recently seen training, with Rohit working closely alongside former cricketer Abhishek Nayar.
