In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, Bangladesh has announced that veteran cricketer Soumya Sarkar will replace regular T20I captain Litton Das, who is currently sidelined due to a muscle injury. This three-match series, set to begin on October 2, will see Jaker Ali continue as captain in Das’ absence.
Litton Das Ruled Out Due to Injury
Litton Das, who has been a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s T20I squad, missed the final two games of the Asia Cup 2025 due to a side strain. After undergoing an MRI scan, it was revealed that the 29-year-old has suffered a grade 1 strain on his left abdominal muscle. As a result, Das has been ruled out of the series against Afghanistan and is expected to undergo a period of rehabilitation.
Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed the news, stating, “He (Das) had missed the last two matches of the Asia Cup with a side strain. An MRI scan revealed a grade 1 strain on the left abdominal muscle. He is undergoing recovery and will not be available for the T20 series. The medical team will continue to manage his rehab and monitor his progress.”
Soumya Sarkar Brings Experience to the Team
Soumya Sarkar, who has been a mainstay in Bangladesh’s white-ball format, comes into the squad as a replacement with 87 T20I caps to his name. Between 2015 and 2024, he has built up a wealth of experience, and his return is expected to bolster the team’s lineup for the Afghanistan series. With a solid reputation in T20 cricket, Sarkar’s inclusion will add depth and stability to the squad, which will be aiming for a strong showing in the series.
