The Asia Cup 2025 has been making headlines, but not just for the action on the field. A controversy erupted after the high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan on September 14 (Sunday), when Indian players reportedly refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts post-match.
PCB Lodges Complaint Against Match Referee
In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), requesting the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft from the rest of the tournament. The PCB was reportedly unhappy with how the incident was handled during and after the game.
Despite the pressure, the ICC dismissed the complaint. Pycroft, who hails from Zimbabwe, went on to officiate Pakistan’s next match against the UAE on September 17 (Wednesday). The PCB had even threatened to boycott the tournament if their concerns were not addressed, raising tensions within the cricketing community.
Kapil Dev Weighs In: “Focus Should Be on Cricket”
Amid growing controversy, former India captain Kapil Dev shared his thoughts on the incident. Speaking to India Today, the 1983 World Cup-winning skipper emphasized the need to focus on the sport rather than off-field drama.
“These are all small things. One should focus on playing cricket,” said Kapil. “If someone does not want to shake hands, there is no need to make a big issue out of it for both sides. It is one’s personal choice whether they want to shake hands or hug.”
He also criticized players who make inflammatory or controversial statements, stating that they tend to distract from the game itself. Additionally, Kapil didn’t hold back when commenting on Pakistan’s performance, saying, “Pakistan did not play good cricket; they need to work on it.”
India vs Pakistan: Round 2 Coming Soon
Cricket fans won’t have to wait long to see these two giants face off again. India and Pakistan are set to meet once more on September 21 (Sunday) in the Super Four stage in Dubai. With the added tension from recent events, the upcoming clash promises to be a thrilling encounter—both on and off the field.
As the tournament progresses, fans and experts alike hope the focus returns to where it belongs: cricket.
