Cricket fans around the world can start marking their calendars as the dates for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup are almost finalized. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the tournament is scheduled to be played from February 7 to March 8, 2026, with India and Sri Lanka set to co-host this much-anticipated global event.

India and Sri Lanka to Co-Host the Tournament

India and Sri Lanka will share hosting duties for the 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup. One of the most notable points about this setup involves the final match. If Pakistan do not reach the final, it will be held in Ahmedabad, India. However, if Pakistan qualify for the final, the match will shift to Colombo, Sri Lanka, since the Pakistan team is not expected to travel to India due to ongoing diplomatic tensions.

This conditional final venue marks a significant planning move by the ICC to accommodate all possible outcomes and ensure a smooth conclusion to the tournament.

Format: More Teams, More Action

The 2026 T20 World Cup will see an expanded format with 20 participating teams, making it one of the largest editions in the tournament’s history. Here’s how the structure will work:

  • The 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five teams each.
  • The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Eight stage.
  • In the Super Eight, the qualified teams will be split into two groups of four teams each.
  • From there, the top two teams in each Super Eight group will qualify for the semifinals, followed by the final.

This format ensures a balanced mix of group matches and knockout excitement, providing more competitive cricket and opportunities for emerging nations.

Teams Qualified So Far

Out of the 20 spots, 15 teams have already qualified, including:

  • Full-member nations like India, Australia, England, Pakistan, South Africa, and others
  • Emerging teams such as the USA, Canada, Netherlands, and Italy

Italy will be making their T20 World Cup debut in this edition, which is a significant milestone for the growth of the sport in Europe.

The remaining five spots will be filled through regional qualifiers:

  • Two teams from the Africa Qualifiers
  • Three teams from the Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifiers

This qualification pathway ensures global representation and continues the ICC’s efforts to globalize the game.
