With India gearing up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, former vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has shared his thoughts on what could provide the Men in Blue the right balance going into the tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rahane emphasized the importance of all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel in India’s Asia Cup campaign.

Hardik Pandya’s Bowling Crucial for Team Balance

Rahane was clear in pointing out that Hardik Pandya’s role will be vital, especially with the ball. Having contributed significantly with both bat and ball in past tournaments, Pandya’s ability to deliver four consistent overs could help India field a more balanced playing XI.

“Hardik’s role in this Asia Cup will be really important. As an all-rounder, he has done really well for the team in the past. Coming at No. 5 or 6 as a batter, creating that impact, playing with a high strike rate, reading the situation, and playing accordingly—he has done it all. I’m sure he can do it again,” Rahane stated.

“What I would like to see from Hardik is bowling his four overs for the team. If he can do that, the team can actually have a very good balance,” he added, stressing how crucial Pandya’s complete skill set is to India’s plans.

Axar Patel: The Underrated All-Round Asset

Rahane also praised Axar Patel, calling him an underrated player who has quietly become one of the most reliable performers for India. Known for his tidy left-arm spin and improved batting, Axar has often delivered in crunch moments.

“I feel he is a very underrated player. He has improved as a cricketer in the last two to three years. Whenever he’s got an opportunity as a batter or bowler, he has performed really well for the team,” Rahane said.

He also highlighted Axar’s versatility with the ball. “He can bowl with the new ball in the powerplay, in the middle overs, and even at the death if needed. That flexibility is a huge plus. And let’s not forget about his fielding—he’s an asset in every department.”

Rahane pointed out that with the Asia Cup set to be played in Dubai, where pitches often assist spinners, Axar’s skillset and experience could play a crucial role.

“Having a player like Axar in your squad gives any captain confidence,” he added.

India will kick off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the UAE on Wednesday, September 10, followed by a high-stakes match against traditional rivals Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. All eyes will be on how Pandya and Axar deliver in this high-pressure tournament as India looks to reclaim the Asia Cup title.
