The fitness legacy of Virat Kohli in Indian cricket is widely acknowledged as the gold standard. Known for his intense training, discipline, and unmatched physical conditioning, Kohli has inspired a new generation of athletes across sports. Now, renowned mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton has drawn a stunning parallel—he says there is a team out there with the same fitness intensity as Kohli: the Indian men’s national hockey team.

Paddy Upton Praises Indian Hockey Team’s Elite Fitness

Paddy Upton, who played a key role in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup victory, recently spoke to Mid-Day about the extraordinary fitness levels of the Indian men’s hockey team. Upton, who was involved with the team during their successful bronze medal run at the 2024 Olympics, returned to the setup ahead of their latest campaign.

“Virat, at his level of fitness and dedication, is unique in world cricket, but here each player is as good as him. This is a team of 18 or 20 Virat Kohlis when it comes to that level of physicality,” said Upton.

His comments highlight not only the physical conditioning of the hockey players but also their holistic commitment to health, which includes strict routines for sleep, nutrition, and recovery.

Hockey Team’s Discipline “Five Leagues” Ahead of 2011 Cricket Squad

In a striking comparison, Upton added that the Indian hockey players are in a different league altogether when compared to the 2011 Indian cricket team. “If I compare the dedication to sleeping, eating, and training of this team to my time in Indian cricket, these guys are another five leagues above that Indian cricket team,” he said.

That’s a bold statement, especially considering the immense respect and admiration the 2011 cricket team commands.

Currently, the Indian men’s hockey team is participating in the Asia Cup, being held in Rajgir, Bihar. Their recent form and fitness levels make them strong contenders in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is preparing for India’s upcoming ODI series in Australia. Having already retired from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, Kohli remains a key figure in the 50-over format and continues to inspire athletes across disciplines with his dedication and athleticism.
