India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has often been at the center of the workload management debate. The fast bowler featured in just three out of the five Tests during the recent series against England, raising eyebrows among fans and critics. Some have questioned whether Bumrah should be allowed to “pick and choose” matches at his convenience. However, cricketing legend Virender Sehwag has come out in support of the current approach.

Virender Sehwag Backs Workload Management for Fast Bowlers

Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Sehwag emphasized the need to manage fast bowlers carefully, especially in the modern era where the game demands a high level of fitness and intensity.

“I think workload is important, especially for bowlers. For batsmen, I don’t think workload is a problem, since they can play and don’t have to play too many matches anyway. So, I think it’s important mainly for bowlers, especially fast bowlers,” Sehwag was quoted as saying, according to News18.

The former India opener highlighted that unlike batters, pacers face significant physical strain and need proper rest between series. If handled well, Sehwag believes fast bowlers can enjoy longer, more impactful careers.

Bumrah Named in India’s Squad for Asia Cup 2025

Jasprit Bumrah has been named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, marking his return to white-ball cricket since his last appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final. His inclusion signals India’s intent to keep their best bowlers fresh and ready for major ICC events.

Sehwag further noted that having key pacers like Bumrah fully fit and available for tournaments such as the Asia Cup or the World Cup can significantly boost India’s chances of winning.

“If they are managed properly, they can play for a longer time. For India, it’s important that all fast bowlers stay fit because in big events like the Asia Cup or World Cup, if they are available, India’s chances of winning will be higher,” Sehwag added.

As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on how Bumrah performs and whether this strategic workload management pays off in crucial games. His return could be a major boost for India’s bowling lineup, especially in the high-pressure knockout stages.
