Former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has shared strong views on the ongoing debate surrounding the comparison between Babar Azam and Indian cricket star Virat Kohli. Speaking in a recent interview, Shehzad said that Babar should never have been compared to a player of Kohli’s stature, especially now that the Pakistan batter is struggling with form.
Babar Azam’s Form Slump Raises Questions
Babar Azam, once hailed as one of the most consistent batters in the world, is currently going through a rough patch. He hasn’t scored a century in his last 72 international innings across all formats, with his last ton coming in an ODI against Nepal in August 2023.
His Test performances have been particularly underwhelming. Since 2023, Babar has managed just 590 runs in 25 Test innings at an average of 23.6 — far below the expectations from a batter of his caliber. Even in ODIs, which is considered his strongest format, Babar is averaging only 30.36 this year.
In the recent three-match ODI series against the West Indies, Babar managed just 56 runs at an average of 18.66 and a strike rate of 62.22 — further amplifying concerns about his form and mindset.
Shehzad Defends Babar, Praises Kohli’s Legacy
Ahmed Shehzad criticized the trend of comparisons in cricket, particularly the one made between Babar and Kohli. “When everything was going well, people were busy comparing Babar to Virat. Now that he’s struggling, the same voices are saying ‘don’t compare’. Why not?” Shehzad questioned.
He continued, “Virat Kohli’s comparison cannot be made with anyone in the world. He is a legend of this generation, a role model. You cannot even compare him with MS Dhoni. Dhoni was a great captain, but as a batter, cricketer, and athlete, Kohli stands alone.”
Shehzad also highlighted how these constant comparisons have added unnecessary pressure on Babar. “No one should be compared with anyone because it’s unfair and it adds extra pressure, which we are now seeing on Babar Azam.”
