Australia’s veteran pacer Josh Hazlewood endured a forgettable outing in the second T20I against South Africa on August 12, 2025, in Darwin. Hazlewood registered his worst bowling figures in T20 Internationals, finishing with 1/56 from his four overs. This performance came under severe pressure from South Africa’s rising star Dewald Brevis, who produced a stunning unbeaten century.

Dewald Brevis Smashes 125* to Dominate Australia

South African batter Dewald Brevis played a sensational knock, scoring an unbeaten 125 off just 56 deliveries. The 21-year-old took the Australian bowlers to the cleaners, especially targeting Hazlewood by scoring 26 runs off just nine deliveries faced from him. Brevis struck four boundaries and a towering six off the Australian quick, showcasing his aggressive intent and flawless shot-making.

His knock not only anchored South Africa’s innings but also propelled them to a record T20I total against Australia.

South Africa Post Record T20I Total Against Australia

Thanks to Brevis’ fireworks, South Africa piled on 218/7, registering their highest-ever T20I total against Australia. This performance surpassed their previous best of 204/7 in Johannesburg in 2016. The total also stands as the second-highest T20I score conceded by Australia at home, only behind West Indies’ 220/6 in Perth in 2024.

Here’s a quick look at South Africa’s highest T20I totals against Australia:

  • 218/7 – Darwin, 2025
  • 204/7 – Johannesburg, 2016
  • 201/4 – Johannesburg, 2006
  • 190/8 – Durban, 2023
  • 178/4 – Cape Town, 2016

Australia’s bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, and Hazlewood, in particular, bore the brunt.

Hazlewood’s Worst T20I Bowling Figures

Josh Hazlewood’s 1/56 in Darwin now stands as his worst bowling performance in T20 Internationals. It surpasses his previous low of 0/50 against South Africa in 2016.

Here are Hazlewood’s five worst T20I bowling performances:

  • 1/56 vs South Africa – Darwin, 2025
  • 0/50 vs South Africa – Johannesburg, 2016
  • 0/49 vs Pakistan – Dubai, 2021
  • 0/46 vs England – Hobart, 2014
  • 0/44 vs West Indies – Hobart, 2024

This outing also ranks as his second-worst performance in all T20s, behind only his 0/64 against Punjab Kings in the 2022 IPL while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Despite the poor outing, Hazlewood remains a key T20 bowler for Australia. In fact, he played a crucial role in RCB’s maiden IPL title win in 2025, taking 22 wickets and finishing as the franchise’s best bowler of the season.
