India currently holds the No.1 ranking in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), having proven their dominance with strong performances in recent years. They reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy held in the UAE and Pakistan. Despite their status as the best ODI team in the world, India haven’t played a single 50-over match since that tournament—and fans will have to wait a little longer.
No ODIs for India Until October 2025
As it stands, India are not scheduled to play any ODI cricket until October 19, 2025, when they travel to Australia for a three-match series. That means a gap of several months between competitive games in the format they currently dominate.
Originally, India were supposed to tour Bangladesh in August 2025 for a white-ball series, which included three ODIs and three T20Is. However, both boards decided to postpone the series.
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have mutually agreed to defer the white-ball series… to September 2026,” a joint statement confirmed.
According to the statement, the decision was made due to “international cricketing commitments and scheduling convenience” for both teams.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: Will They Play?
Adding to the anticipation is the situation surrounding Indian batting icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both have retired from Test and T20I formats and now exclusively play ODIs for India. Their appearances have become rare events, which makes the long wait even harder for fans.
However, their selection for the Australia ODIs isn’t guaranteed. Reports suggest that neither player is an automatic pick anymore—they’ll need to prove their fitness and form ahead of the series.
Following the Australian tour, India have a busy home schedule. They are set to host South Africa and New Zealand for a total of six ODIs between December 2025 and January 26, 2026.
After that, there’s another break from ODIs, with the next series scheduled for July 2026, when India will tour England for white-ball matches.
Final Thoughts
India may be the top ODI side in the world, but their calendar is surprisingly light on 50-over cricket in 2025. With postponed series and limited matches, fans will be eagerly counting down to October—especially to see if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to action in blue.
