West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has publicly addressed the recent sexual misconduct allegations involving a member of the West Indies cricket team. The player, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, is reportedly facing accusations from at least 11 women, as per a report by Guyana-based Kaieteur News. The claims include rape, sexual assault, harassment, and unwanted advances. However, no formal charges have been filed as of yet.

Sammy Urges Patience and Justice

Speaking ahead of the second Test against Australia, which begins on July 3 in Grenada, Sammy emphasized the importance of due process while expressing concern for everyone involved.

“We’re all aware of what’s been going on in the media. I’m very close to my players. I’ve had conversations with them, making sure their mental space is good,” he said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“One thing I can say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served. However, there’s a process. We will continue to support in whatever way we can to ensure that due process is followed. As a cricketing board, and for me as the head coach, I want justice for everyone.

“But, as of now, these are all allegations. And we understand the justice system—things must be allowed to take their proper course.”

Controversy Over Umpiring Decisions in First Test

Alongside the off-field issues, the West Indies team also dealt with frustrations during the first Test match in Barbados. TV umpire Adrian Holdstock came under fire for a series of controversial decisions during DRS reviews, prompting criticism from Sammy himself.

The ICC responded by fining Sammy 15 percent of his match fee and handing him a demerit point for his post-match comments. Despite the punishment, Sammy stood by his initial concerns, stating he acted in defense of his players’ mental well-being.

“I said I wouldn’t want my players to attend that press conference because of the questions I believed would be directed at them. I strongly stand by what I said,” Sammy explained.

He added that there have since been clarifying discussions with match officials and even an admission of error.

“That was in Barbados, and now we’re in Grenada, so we’ve moved on. I don’t hold grudges. I said what I said based on what I observed. I’ve been punished for it. I honestly wish Adrian all the best. We’re all human. I have nothing against the umpires. I really hope he has an excellent game.”
