India’s 2025 Test tour of England will mark a significant moment in cricket history. For the first time since Ben Stokes became a key part of England’s red-ball setup, India will be playing a Test series in England without Virat Kohli.

Stokes Praises Kohli’s Legacy and Competitive Spirit

Reacting to Kohli’s absence, Ben Stokes opened up in a video released by England Cricket, reflecting on the Indian star’s massive influence on the game. “I think what India will miss will be his fighting spirit, his competitiveness, his desire to win,” Stokes said. “He has made number 18 his, hasn’t he?”

Kohli, known for his fiery attitude and unmatched consistency, retired from Test cricket earlier this year. While he continues to make himself available for ODIs, the upcoming England tour will feel unusual for fans and players alike. “It’ll be a bit weird not to see the number 18 on the back of any Indian shirt,” Stokes added. “He has been class for them for a long period of time.”

A Rivalry Built on Mutual Respect

Stokes also shared how much he enjoyed facing Kohli over the years. “I did text him, saying it’s going to be a shame not to play against him,” he said. “I love playing against Virat. We both love competing because we have that same mindset—it’s a battle when we’re out there.”

Virat Kohli’s retirement closes the chapter on one of modern cricket’s most exciting rivalries. While India will look to a new generation of players to step up in 2025, the absence of Kohli’s presence, especially in a series as intense as England vs India, will be deeply felt.

As for Stokes, he had previously retired from ODI cricket but returned for the 2023 World Cup before stepping away again. Unlike Kohli, though, Stokes continues to be a key figure in England’s Test squad as they prepare to host an Indian side missing one of its greatest ever players.
