The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has officially postponed the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup 2025, citing adverse weather conditions and health concerns caused by a chikungunya outbreak in Sri Lanka. The tournament, which was a major platform for developing young female cricketers across Asia, will now be rescheduled.

ACC Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the decision on Monday, stating that the council is fully committed to rescheduling the event as soon as it’s safe and feasible.

Why the Tournament Was Postponed

The decision followed a formal request from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva. In his letter to the ACC, Silva highlighted warnings from the Sri Lanka Meteorological Department. The country is currently experiencing severe weather conditions due to the southwest monsoon, including strong winds and heavy rainfall across multiple provinces.

Additionally, rising health risks from the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus in affected areas played a key role in the postponement decision. These concerns made it difficult for the ACC to ensure the safety of players, staff, and spectators.

ACC Vows Quick Rescheduling

In a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Chairman Naqvi emphasized the importance of the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup for the future of women’s cricket in Asia.

“The ACC is committed to providing opportunities for young women cricketers to develop their skills and compete at the highest level. We understand the strategic significance of this tournament in shaping the future of women’s cricket in Asia, and we will work diligently to reschedule the event at the earliest possible date,” Naqvi stated.

Political Tensions May Further Complicate Participation

While the postponement is officially linked to weather and health concerns, political tensions in the region also loom large. India and Pakistan are currently experiencing strained diplomatic ties following a tragic incident in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists were killed in a cross-border terrorist attack. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, escalating regional tensions.

Despite these developments, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that no final decision had been made about India’s participation in the event. However, given the current geopolitical climate, many observers believe it is unlikely that India will take part if the tournament is rescheduled in Sri Lanka or any neutral venue involving Pakistan.

The ACC is expected to announce a new schedule in the coming weeks. Fans and players alike are hopeful that the tournament will return stronger, offering young women across Asia the chance to shine on the international stage.
