Sydney Sixers allrounder Jack Edwards has called on his side to play with freedom and confidence in their BBL Challenger final against defending champions Hobart Hurricanes, admitting the team “stuffed it up” in their loss to Perth Scorchers but insisting there is no room for hesitation now.

After being bowled out for just 99 at Optus Stadium despite restricting the Scorchers to 146, the Sixers were left frustrated by a dramatic batting collapse. From a strong position at 63 for 3, they lost seven wickets for 36 runs, denying Steven Smith the chance to anchor the chase after he faced only a handful of deliveries early on. However, finishing in the top two has earned the Sixers a second opportunity, this time on home soil at the SCG.

Mitchell Starc is expected to be available despite landing awkwardly on his left shoulder in Perth, a significant boost as the Sixers look to rebound quickly.

Sixers Back Youth and Fearless Approach

Edwards, who was part of the collapse after being dismissed for a duck, stressed the importance of maintaining an aggressive mindset regardless of the target or circumstances. He acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but made it clear the team will not abandon the style of cricket that has brought them success throughout the season.

With a younger middle order featuring Lachlan Shaw and Joel Davies, and Jordan Silk currently out of the XI, the Sixers are leaning into their future talent. Edwards believes the experience gained from the Qualifier defeat will prove valuable, especially for players who were thrown into pressure situations against quality opposition.

Steven Smith’s form has been a major talking point after his recent explosive innings, but Edwards emphasised that the responsibility cannot fall on one player alone. Hobart Hurricanes captain Ben McDermott even joked that Smith is “probably due to fail at some point,” underlining the need for the Sixers’ supporting cast to step up when it matters most.

Edwards and Davies Shine as Hurricanes Sweat on Fitness

One of the standout positives for Sydney this season has been their bowling depth. Edwards has enjoyed a breakout BBL campaign, claiming 17 wickets at an impressive average and earning selection in the team of the tournament. His development with the ball has been rapid, helped by working closely with experienced bowlers and under the guidance of captain Moises Henriques.

Left-arm spinner Joel Davies has also impressed, showing remarkable composure for a 22-year-old and consistently delivering economical spells against top-level batters. Edwards praised Davies’ calmness under pressure, suggesting his maturity goes beyond his limited experience.

Off the field, Edwards’ stock continues to rise. He secured a lucrative IPL deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad and is set to join Australia’s T20I squad in Pakistan once the Sixers’ BBL campaign concludes.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes face uncertainty over the fitness of captain Nathan Ellis and allrounder Chris Jordan. Ellis missed the Knockout match with hamstring concerns, while Jordan is managing a calf issue that could rule him out. Hobart will assess both players closer to match time as they aim to field their strongest possible lineup.
